Experienced Fire Alarm Engineer: Fire Alarm Servicing, Maintenance, Fault-Finding & Repairs

Salary: £38,000 – £45,000 per year, depending on experience

Black & Gold Fire Safety is growing and we are looking for experienced Fire Alarm Engineers to join our team. This is a full-time, permanent role for capable engineers who can work independently, diagnose faults properly and take pride in delivering high-quality work and exceptional customer service. You will be servicing, maintaining, fault-finding and repairing fire alarm systems across commercial and residential sites. The role also includes work on smoke ventilation systems, emergency lighting and associated remedial works. This is not a role for someone just starting out. We are looking for competent, experienced engineers who take pride in doing the job properly and representing the company professionally on site.

About The Role

This is a service-led role covering fire alarm systems, smoke ventilation systems and emergency lighting, with opportunities to support larger installation projects alongside our install team. You will be trusted to work independently, diagnose faults correctly and carry out remedial works to a high standard. All works must be recorded using the company’s service management software, with reports completed accurately, clearly and professionally.

Key Responsibilities

Fire Alarm Systems

• Service, maintain, fault-find and repair addressable and conventional fire alarm systems
• Carry out planned preventative maintenance and reactive call-outs
• Accurately diagnose faults and implement permanent corrective solutions
• Carry out remedial works, including device replacement, minor system modifications and repairs
• Complete clear, professional digital reports
• Participate in a shared on-call rota

Smoke Ventilation & AOV Systems

• Inspect, test and maintain AOV and smoke ventilation systems
• Test actuators, detectors, fireman’s switches, interfaces and control panels
• Identify faults and carry out or recommend remedial works

Emergency Lighting

• Carry out monthly and annual testing in accordance with BS 5266-1
• Identify failures and carry out remedial works, including battery and luminaire replacement
• Ensure accurate digital test records are maintained

Fire Extinguishers

• Service and maintain portable fire extinguishers to BS 5306, where experienced
• Advise clients on correct extinguisher provision and placement
• Training can be provided if required

Installation Support

• Work alongside the installation team on larger fire alarm and life safety projects where required
• Assist with system upgrades, commissioning and final testing

Reporting & Systems

• Use the company’s service management software to record all works
• Complete reports accurately, clearly and to a high professional standard
• Ensure documentation is suitable for client review, compliance records and audit purposes
• What We’re Looking For

• Minimum 3+ years’ experience in the fire safety industry
• Proven background in service, maintenance, fault-finding and remedial works
• Confident working independently from day one
• Able to diagnose faults methodically, not through guesswork
• Able to carry out remedial works confidently and competently

Technical Experience

• Experience with addressable and conventional fire alarm systems
• Experience with major manufacturers such as Kentec, Advanced, Morley, C-TEC and Gent
• Wireless fire alarm system experience is essential, including EMS, Hyfire, EDA or Apollo
• Knowledge
• Strong working knowledge of relevant standards, including:
  • BS 5839-1
  • BS 5266-1
  • BS 7346-8
  • BS 5306

Qualifications

• FIA Units or equivalent in fire alarm maintenance and/or commissioning
• Electrical qualification desirable but not essential

Other Requirements

• Full and clean UK driving licence
• Able to pass an enhanced DBS check
• Able to work in London, including Central London, the Home Counties and the South East
• Able to work independently
• Comfortable using mobile devices, laptops and digital reporting systems
• Able to be on call 1 week in 3, from Friday 5pm to Friday 8am
• Clear and professional communication skills
• Able to work to high standards
• Able to represent Black & Gold Fire Safety professionally on site

Desirable Experience

• Able to service and maintain portable fire extinguishers to BS 5306
• PASMA trained
• IPAF trained
• Able to utilise available resources to resolve technical issues
• Able to organise yourself and prioritise your workload
• Experienced and able to contact technical support when required

Within your first 6 months, you will be expected to:

• Manage service and maintenance visits independently
• Diagnose faults methodically
• Carry out remedial works confidently and competently
• Produce clear, professional reports that clients can rely on
• Represent Black & Gold Fire Safety positively and professionally on site and with clients

Pay

• £38,000 – £45,000 per year, depending on experience
